NC STATE INSPECTION:
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW IN 2026

Everything you need to know about North Carolina's annual safety and emissions inspection. What gets checked, what commonly fails, and how to prepare your vehicle for a smooth pass.

SAFETY INSPECTION CHECKLIST

Brakes (pads, rotors, drums, lines)Common Failure

Most common failure point. Listen for squealing or grinding.

Tires (tread depth, condition, matching)Common Failure

Minimum 2/32" tread depth. Mismatched sizes fail.

Lights (headlights, taillights, signals, brake)Common Failure

All lights must work. Bring spare bulbs just in case.

Horn

Must be audible from 200 feet.

Windshield wipers

Must clear windshield effectively. Replace worn blades.

Mirrors (both sides)

Must be present and properly adjusted.

Steering system

No excessive play. Power steering must work.

Suspension components

No broken springs, leaking shocks, or worn bushings.

Exhaust system

No leaks. Must exit behind passenger compartment.

Window tint (front side windows)Common Failure

Must allow 35%+ light transmission. Factory tint usually passes.

Seat belts

Must retract and latch properly.

Fuel system (no leaks)

Visual inspection for fuel odor or wet spots.

EMISSIONS TESTING REQUIREMENTS

Cabarrus County Requires Emissions Testing

Since CTR Repair is located in Cabarrus County, all applicable vehicles inspected here will receive both safety and emissions testing. This applies to most gasoline vehicles 1996 and newer.

1996 and newer
OBD-II scan

Computer plugs into your car's diagnostic port. Checks for stored trouble codes and monitor readiness.

Diesel vehicles
Visual inspection

No visible smoke test. Diesel vehicles don't get OBD-II emissions testing in NC.

First 3 model years
Exempt

Brand new vehicles are exempt from emissions testing for the first 3 model years.

Antique vehicles (35+ years)
Exempt

Vehicles 35+ years old are exempt from emissions testing.

Electric/Hybrid
Exempt from emissions

Still require safety inspection. No tailpipe test needed.

HOW TO PREPARE FOR YOUR INSPECTION

Before You Go

  • • Check all exterior lights yourself (have someone help)
  • • Verify windshield wipers clear effectively
  • • Ensure check engine light is not illuminated
  • • Drive 50+ miles after any recent battery disconnect
  • • Check tire tread with the penny test
  • • Remove illegal window tint before arriving

Common Reasons for Failure

  • • Check engine light on (any stored DTC = fail)
  • • Burned-out bulbs (especially brake lights)
  • • Worn brake pads below minimum thickness
  • • Tire tread below 2/32" in any spot
  • • Window tint too dark on front side windows
  • • OBD monitors not ready (recent battery work)
