Know the Signs

Warning Signs Your Box Truck Needs Repair

Box trucks in delivery service are under constant stress. Catching problems early prevents roadside breakdowns and costly emergency repairs.

Engine & Powertrain

Check engine light or derate mode

ECM detected emissions or engine problem. Derate limits power — requires OEM-level scan tool diagnosis.

Loss of power under load

Turbo failure, fuel system issue, or aftertreatment restriction limiting engine output.

Excessive smoke (white, black, blue)

White = coolant, Black = fuel, Blue = oil. Each indicates a different system failure.

Hard starting or rough idle

Fuel system, glow plug, or compression issue. Worsens in cold weather.

Brake System

Brake pedal soft or spongy

Air in hydraulic system, master cylinder failure, or brake fluid leak.

Grinding or squealing when braking

Worn pads/shoes contacting rotors/drums. Metal-to-metal contact causes expensive damage.

Truck pulls to one side under braking

Uneven brake wear, stuck caliper, or contaminated friction material on one side.

Liftgate

Liftgate won't raise or lowers slowly

Low hydraulic fluid, worn pump, motor failure, or electrical issue.

Liftgate drifts down under load

Cylinder bypass or valve issue — safety hazard requiring immediate repair.

Unusual noise from liftgate motor

Motor bearing wear, low fluid causing cavitation, or electrical supply issue.

DPF Warning — Don't Ignore Derate

Box trucks in urban delivery service are especially susceptible to DPF problems because frequent stopping doesn't generate enough exhaust heat for automatic regeneration. A derate condition that limits engine power will worsen and can eventually prevent the truck from running. Call CTR at (704) 786-0132 for DPF diagnosis.

Box Truck Brake Systems

Hydraulic, Air, and Hybrid Brakes

Box trucks span the transition between hydraulic and air brake systems. CTR services all three types across every box truck platform.

Box truck brake system service

Hydraulic Brakes

Class 3–5 (under 19,501 lbs)

Master cylinder, brake booster, disc/drum brakes, ABS, brake line service

Air Brakes

Class 6–7

Complete air brake service — compressor, dryer, chambers, slack adjusters, S-cams

Air-Over-Hydraulic

Some medium-duty platforms

Hybrid system using compressed air to boost hydraulic brake pressure

Delivery Duty Cycle: Box trucks in urban delivery service consume brake components 2–3× faster than highway trucks due to constant stop-and-go operation. Proactive brake inspection at every PM prevents roadside failures.
