Why Choose CTR

DEF System Repair Experts

DEF system problems are the most common cause of engine derate on modern diesel trucks. The progression from warning light to 5 mph speed limit can happen in as little as a few hours of operation — shutting your truck down and costing hundreds per day in lost revenue.

CTR uses OEM-level diagnostic tools — Cummins INSITE, Detroit DLA, PACCAR Davie, and Navistar ServiceMaxx — to identify the exact failed component. We don't guess and replace parts hoping to find the problem. We test, diagnose, and repair the specific cause.

Located on Armentrout Drive directly off I-85 at Exit 58. Most DEF repairs completed same-day or next-day. All repairs backed by our 3-year, 36,000-mile warranty.

Know the Signs

Warning Signs of DEF System Failure

DEF problems escalate through a derate progression that can shut your truck down to 5 mph. Address warnings immediately.

High Priority

DEF Warning Light

DEF system fault detected. Warning light and message displayed. Address promptly before derate begins.

Critical

Power Reduction

Engine power reduced to 75% or 60%. Truck can still operate but with significantly reduced performance.

Critical

5 MPH Speed Limit

Truck limited to 5 mph — effectively shut down. Emergency repair required to restore operation.

High Priority

DEF Crystallization

White crystalline deposits around dosing unit or exhaust injection point. Most common DEF failure.

Monitor

Frequent DEF Top-Off

DEF consumption significantly higher than normal 2–3% of fuel consumption. Possible dosing unit malfunction.

High Priority

Check Engine Light

DEF/SCR fault codes stored. Even without derate, codes indicate developing problems that will escalate.

Derate Progression

Stage 1

Warning Light & Message

DEF system fault detected. Warning light illuminates.

Stage 2

Power Reduction (75–60%)

Engine power reduced. Truck operates with significantly reduced performance.

Stage 3

5 MPH Speed Limit

Truck limited to 5 mph. Operation effectively shut down.

DEF Deletes Are Illegal

Deleting the DEF/SCR system violates the federal Clean Air Act — penalties up to $5,000/individual and $500,000+/business. CTR repairs systems to function as designed.

How It Works

Understanding Your DEF System

The DEF system is a chain of components — tank, pump, dosing unit, quality sensor, NOx sensors, and SCR catalyst. Failure at any point triggers derate.

DEF system components

DEF Tank & Heater

Stores the 32.5% urea solution. Integrated heater prevents freezing at 12°F. Level sensor reports to ECM.

DEF Pump & Lines

Draws fluid from tank and delivers it under pressure to the dosing unit. Filter removes contaminants.

Dosing Unit (Injector)

Sprays precisely metered DEF into the exhaust stream. ECM controls dosing rate based on load, temperature, and NOx feedback.

NOx Sensors

Upstream and downstream sensors measure NOx concentration. ECM compares readings to calculate SCR conversion efficiency.

SCR Catalyst

Where DEF reacts with NOx on the catalyst surface, converting them to harmless nitrogen and water vapor.
