Why Choose CTR

EGR System Repair Experts

The EGR system is one of the most failure-prone emission control systems on modern diesel engines. Carbon buildup fouls valves, thermal stress cracks coolers, and soot plugs passages — all causing power loss, poor fuel economy, and engine derate conditions.

CTR diagnoses EGR problems with OEM-level tools on every major platform — Cummins, Detroit Diesel, PACCAR, and Navistar. We determine whether cleaning or replacement is the most cost-effective approach for your specific situation.

Located on Armentrout Drive directly off I-85 at Exit 58. All EGR repairs backed by our 3-year, 36,000-mile warranty.

Know the Signs

Warning Signs of EGR Problems

Critical

EGR Valve Stuck Open

Rough idle, excessive black smoke, significant power loss, poor fuel economy, engine stalling at idle.

High Priority

EGR Valve Stuck Closed

Increased NOx emissions, check engine light, emission fault codes, engine derate, higher combustion temps.

Critical

EGR Cooler Internal Leak

White smoke, coolant loss without visible leak, potential hydrolock. Most serious EGR failure.

High Priority

Carbon Buildup

Progressive restriction of EGR flow and intake airflow, degrading performance over time.

High Priority

EGR-Related DPF Loading

Malfunctioning EGR increases soot production, accelerating DPF loading and regen frequency.

Critical

Engine Derate Condition

EGR faults trigger progressive engine derate — reduced power and speed limits.

⚠ EGR Delete Warning

EGR delete violates the federal Clean Air Act — penalties up to $5,000/violation for individuals, $500,000+ for businesses. CTR repairs the system to function as designed.

How It Works

Understanding Your EGR System

EGR system components

EGR Valve

Electronically controlled valve regulating exhaust gas flow back into the intake. Operates in extremely harsh conditions — hot, soot-laden exhaust flows through it with every opening.

EGR Cooler

Heat exchanger using engine coolant to reduce exhaust gas temperature before it enters the intake. Subject to extreme thermal stress — hot exhaust on one side, cool coolant on the other.

EGR Passages & Intake

Passages connecting the EGR system to the intake manifold accumulate carbon and soot deposits over time, restricting flow and reducing effectiveness.

VGT Integration

On many engines, the EGR system and variable geometry turbocharger work together. The VGT creates exhaust backpressure needed to push gas through the EGR circuit.

Aftertreatment Connection

EGR directly affects DPF loading — a malfunctioning valve increases soot production. A leaking cooler can contaminate the DPF catalyst with coolant.
